I’ve always called Ray, “brotherman Ray”. because we are kindred spirits and he is highly sensitive and feeling, like me. I have always related and identified with him and his songs, lyrics, and melodies. part of my soul. This song has always been something to me. Cause, I, too, found myself “face down in the ditch” etc. I’ve literally lived this song. and I know what it feels like, to, “sold my coat when I hit Spokane.” I wish I could sit and talk with Ray. I know he’d be somebody that understood me. I still haven’t met anyone in the flesh that does. wish I could sit down with Ray, and just talk.

This song will always remind me of my wife. We were together for 10 years and I had a severe drug problem throughout and she stuck by me. Eventually, my life became so out of control I could no longer put this wonderful woman before my habit. We split, I became broken, homeless and wishing I could've been different. She spent a couple of years going in and out of different relationships that couldn't touch the place that I, even as a broken person, could. We wandered through our own unhappy, dark paths alone for all intents and purposes wondering what could have been and I went through hell. I built up resentment towards her...when I'm the one who started the tailspin. I eventually got clean...and after 2 years apart, we came back together. She let me come home. I had some things worth a' tellin for sure. There was plenty of healing that needed to happen on both ends but we worked through it.

For the longest time i never heard the DJ announcing who did the song i just heard. Kept missing it. Crazy, Joni Mitchell kept coming thru to me. Both this and Beg, Steal, Borrow especially had so much reminded me of something she had recorded. Thought it was a New tune from her. Finally a friend set stupid ass straight. Gotta love the RAY! Bob Odenkirk made a movie called Let's Go To Prison and he commissioned Meg White to write a drum theme for Dax Shepherd's character. Against Odenkirk's wishes it got dropped from the soundtrack however it's on this Gossip in the Grain album. Now I'm not saying that I know whereabouts on the album it is but I'd hazard a guess that it's used in this track.
